5 Must-Do Holiday Activities Near Charleston

The holiday season in low country is nothing short of festive lightings, parades and special events. Here’s five fun things to do this month and take advantage of the season:

Aquarium Aglow at the South Carolina Aquarium

Aquarium Aglow is perfect for the couples who’d like a unique night out sans littles, so grab a babysitter and get ready to enjoy a Chucktown holiday season favorite. On select nights, doors will open at dusk for a chance to view dazzling lights amidst the creatures of the deep. As a bonus: adult beverages are available to purchase along with multiple photo ops.

In addition to the regular Aglow festivities is the family-friendly NYE Aglow Celebration from 5:30-9:30pm giving you time to get the littles back home. The NYE Aglow will feature a DJ, face painting, ball drop, and a stilt walker.

Night of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens

Located just over an hour from Charleston is the enchanting Brookgreen Gardens holiday specialty: Night of a Thousand Candles. Imagine 2,700 hand lit candles and millions of sparkling lights all visible within the walls of Brookgreen Gardens. Walk the paths of the gardens and enjoy a warm cider as you celebrate the season with family and friends. This is a great trip for the littles, although it does run a little past bedtime, 4pm-9pm, on now through December 31. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Folly Beach Christmas Tree & Christmas Parade

Hey, the reindeer let it slip that Santa loves the beach. That’s probably why he puts up a tree on Folly Beach. Come take a stroll in the sand, check out the tree, and make sure Santa gets those wishlists! On Saturday, December 9th at Center St., join the town of Folly for the annual Folly Beach Christmas Parade. There will be floats, marching bands, and community groups all enjoying the holiday season.
