The Submarine Birthday Virtual 5K is back this year, happening the week of April 6-12, 2025! The 5K offers a fun opportunity to team up with your command, FRG or even civilian family and friends from anywhere in the world and raise money for a good cause. Proceeds from the race benefit the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, which provides educational scholarships to children and spouses of U.S. Navy submariners.
To learn more about the race and why you should get involved, here are four things to know:
The race is virtual
The 5K is virtual, which means anyone can participate anywhere in the world! Your registration ($35-$50) includes a donation to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, a race t-shirt, a bib and a finisher’s medal. The race is virtual and can be completed any time during the week of April 6-12. Participants are encouraged to follow the Submarine Virtual 5K on Facebook and Instagram and tag their training or racing photos with #subday5K and #runsilentrundeep.
You can sign up as an individual or a team
You’re welcome to participate in the 5K as an individual or a team. Consider forming a team with your command, including civilian friends and family. The command with the highest number of participants will win a trophy! If you want a smaller team, the 5K is a great opportunity to build camaraderie within wardrooms, Family Readiness Groups (FRG), Submarine Officer Spouse Association (SOSA) groups or even just your close friends and families.
You don’t have to run
Is running not for you? This 5K race can be completed in any form – walking, running, hiking, swimming, biking, etc. You can get your FRG together and train for a 5K run or simply go on a power walk along your favorite trail. You can even just get your family together for a casual family bike ride, but for a good cause. Which leads us to the next…
Proceeds go towards a great cause
The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is the submarine community’s premier non-profit, which provides educational scholarships to children and spouses of U.S. Navy submariners. To date, the organization is proud to have awarded over $15,000,000 to more than 1,500 students attending universities and colleges through the United States. Funds are raised throughout the year with special fundraisers like the Annual Cartoon Calendar, Annual Golf Tournaments, silent auctions and this virtual submarine race, to name a few.
