Since we originally published this list in March, we’ve found a few more great playgrounds to add to the list! As we’ve mentioned before, the Groton area has some great hiking trails and stroller-friendly walks. And as it turns out, you can add playgrounds to that list.
Here’s a list of our favorite parks:
Mohegan Park – Norwich
Moehgan Park is well worth the drive! Located about 30 minutes from Groton, the park offers two playgrounds with many fun activities. We featured the park previously for its stroller-friendly trail, but its playgrounds are worth a special mention. 189 Mohegan Park Rd, Norwich, CT 06360
Tercentennial Legacy Playground – Groton
Located at Poquonnock Plains Park, this playground is a popular destination for families of all ages. The expansive playground offers a variety of structures and play features, from a sway boat, cool sand play area, a lopsided swing and more. 1 Central Ave, Groton, CT 06340
Poquonnock River Walkway – Groton
Did you know there’s a boardwalk trail in Groton? Poquonnock River Walkway park is located right outside Bluff Point State Park, with a small parking lot and toddler-sized playground. I love this playground for my little guy because the play structure is low to the ground without any large openings he could fall out of it. 65 Depot Road, Groton, CT 06340.
Eastern Point Beach – Groton
Did you know Eastern Point Beach recently remodeled its playground? The fenced-in playground now has foam padding and includes multiple swing sets and space to spread out. 1 Beach Pond Rd, Groton, CT 06340
Colonel Ledyard Park – Ledyard
Colonel Ledyard Park is a great family destination with its sprawling fields, hiking trail, pavillion, tennis courts, volleyball court and a fanastic playground. The park also has designated four square and hopscotch grounds. 21 Blonder’s Blvd.Ledyard, CT 06339
Mystic River Playground – Mystic
Mystic River Playground is a great little park in the heart of downtown Mystic, just tucked behind the Mystic River Park on Washington and Willow Streets. The playground is fenced in with a nice, open space including a jungle gym, swing sets, wood chip play area, benches and picnic tables.
Admiral Fife Playground – Stonington
We reported in 2021, Admiral Fife Recreation Area received a major, major facelift to its playground (with a big ol yellow submarine!). The park is operated by the MWR and offers a softball field, horseshoe pits, volleyball court and half-court baseketball courts. Pets are not allowed. There are restrooms, as well! Be wary, we’ve heard reports that groundskeepers will check for military ID. As we understand it this park is only open to military members and their immediate families. 623 Stonington Rd, Stonington, CT 06378.
