Massanutten Resort (Massanutten, VA)

Situated about 3.5 hours away, this is a family-friendly ski resort. They make their own snow when it is cold enough. Lessons are offered and can be booked in advance on their website. About 3 hours away, this is a smaller, family-friendly resort with a mixture of beginner, intermediate, and advanced. They offer ski lessons and have other amenities available, including spa packages.
Liberty Mountain Resort (Fairfield, PA)

Located about 4.5 hours away, this mountain offers more intermediate and advanced trails. They have ski/snowboard lessons, terrain parks and adaptive ski lessons.
Winterplace Ski Resort (Ghent, WV)

5.5 hours away, this park is large and family friendly, with a good mixture of easy, intermediate, and advanced trails. They offer ski lessons, racing, terrain parks, and tubing.
Sugar Mountain Resort (Sugar Mountain, NC)

Located 6 hours away from Norfolk, this is a smaller but family friendly mountain. They offer lessons, tubing, ice skating, and snow shoeing. They are also the only resort on this list that offer on site childcare with advanced reservations.
Shawnee Ski Mountain (East Stroudsburg, PA)

Located 6.5 hours away, this is a family friendly resort with mostly intermediate trails. They offer lessons, a terrain park, and children’s camps.
