
Today is National Pizza Day! To celebrate, we polled several sub spouses on their favorite places to grab a slice near Groton. From thin crust and deep dish, to vegan and gluten-free varieties, Southeastern Connecticut actually has a great variety of pizza to choose from.
Here are the 11 contenders that came out on top (in no specific order):
Wings ‘N Pies

With two nearby locations in New London and Groton, Wings ‘N Pies seems to be one of the most popular spots. Located kiddy corner to Submarine Base New London, the pizzeria offers take-out, delivery and limited dine-in options.
NY Family Pizza

Located in the unassuming strip mall near Kohl’s in Groton, NY Family Pizza sells the famous NY-style pizza by the slice or the whole pie. They currently offer take-out and delivery, including access to the sub base. They’re currently running a special of free garlic knots when you order at least one pizza.
Rolling Tomato

The Rolling Tomato specializes in wood-fired pizza and offers a variety including gluten-free options. The restaurant offers delivery and has a food truck that is known to pop-up around town during the warmer months.
Gold Star Pizza

Located off (you guessed it) Gold Star Highway, Gold Star Pizza is another favorite. The no-nonsense pizzeria also offers a whole lot more than pizza, including sandwiches, salads, Italian dinners, seafood and more. They currently offer pick-up.
Illiano’s

Illiano’s in Waterford offers a wide variety of pizza and Italian delights. The restaurant is currently offering a family dinner special, four entrees, bread and salad for 5-6 people ($40). The restaurant offers take-out and delivery, as well.
Mystic Pizza

This is always a hot debate. But if you’re new to Groton, you should definitely go and try it for yourself. Mystic Pizza, the iconic pizzeria (Julia Robert’s “Mystic Pizza”) has two locations in downtown Mystic and North Stonington. The restaurant is styled like an old-school pizzeria, serving up speciality and classic pizzas.
Mango’s Wood Fired-Pizza

Located at Olde Mistick Village, Mango’s Wood-Fired Pizza offers a variety of wood-fired delights from wings to pizza. The restaurant offers vegan and gluten-free options, as well. Mango’s currently offers limited dine-in and curbside delivery.
Pizzetta

Pizzetta in Mystic is a great pizzeria for everyone – meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans alike! The restaurant offers their main menu with seperate vegan, gluten free and vegetarian menus to boot.
Nana’s Bakery & Pizza

The newly-opened Nana’s offers baked goods, coffee and donuts by morning, and delicious pizzas by afternoon and night. The eatery specializes in their seriously good sourdough.
Crown’s

Crown’s Pizza of Waterford is another favorite, specializing in “coming home for dinner.” The restaurant serves up pizzas, speciality pizzas, fresh salads, grinders, pasta and more.
Fireside Brick Oven

Fireside Brick Oven in Gales Ferry is another great contender. The pizzeria specializes in everything “fired,” from wings and quesadillas to pizzas and brick-oven sandwiches.
