5 Fun Things to Do Near Groton This Weekend

As Connecticut has loosened its COVID guidelines (with plans to entirely eliminate May 19), it’s nice to see events are making a return. While safety measures are still in place (and if your sailor is home – what he or she is allowed to do), we hope you can get out this weekend and enjoy something new.

Here’s a line-up of events to consider:

New England Food Truck Fests At Poquonnock Plains Park

The New England Food Truck Fest is coming to Groton this Saturday, from 12pm-7pm at Poquonnock Plains Park! The community event will host up to 20 of the best trucks from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with free entry, parking and live music by local bands. Attendees are encouraged to comply with state social distancing and mask wearing guidelines. Masks must be worn at all times while waiting in lines and approaching food trucks. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a blanket or fold up chairs to relax on and enjoy their afteroon.


The Cloak & Wand Grand Opening

The highly anticipated Cloak and Wand shop opens this weekend in Olde Mistick Village. Witches, wizards and non-magic folk of all ages are invited to their grand opening celebration. The shop will offer interactive experiences and sell magical items like wands, books and apparel while also deepening their understanding of potions and spells with knowledgable staff on hand to assist. The shop also features a large witching tree,” potion bar and licensed merchanise from favorites like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Hocus Pocus to name a few.

The Cloak and Wand’s doors will open at 10am on Saturday, May 1st. Fun activity sheets will be passed out to those waiting in line. For more information, click here.


Derby in the Village Weekend at Olde Mistick Village

This weekend celebrate the Kentucky Derby with Derby in the Village! During the weekend, Olde Mistick Village will be holding a Scavenger Hunt from Saturday morning 10:00am-6:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm, along with a Derby Hat contest for the best derby style hat! Use the hashtag #derbyinthevillage to tag your photo for a chance to win a gift certificate!!The weekend will also be full of live music.



Woodfellas Pizza Truck & Live Music at Saltwater Farm Vineyard

Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington, with a special apperance by Woodfellas Pizza Truck and live music by Kala Farnham from 1:3pm to 3:30pm. You can familarize yourself with the tasting room policies and COVID protocols here.

Shred-It Day at Groton Public Library

Not as exciting as food trucks and wineries, but it is the perfect time of year to start cleaning out all of your old files. The Groton Public Library and Liberty Bank are hosting a free shredding event in the library’s parking lot from 10am-12pm. Bring up to three file-sized boxes for complimentary safe and secure shredding. Non-perishable food items will also be accepted and donated to local food pantries. Infoshred staff will be taking proper COVID-19 precautions during this event.
